Hi Anitha,

According to Ayurveda, Day sleep is one of the primary causes for weight gain due to change in the metabolic activities. As i suggested many times use the Simple apple diet – 1 apple before breakfast, two before lunch and two before dinner, this not only helps in weight loss also helps in correcting the metabolic changes. Also do check your Vitamin D and Thyroid levels as day sleep can alter these two. If deficiency is noted it has to replaced with required supplements. Please pay attention to exercise. Anyone who wishes to have healthy life after 40 should spend at least one hour in exercise. Plan your day accordingly for exercise.

Dear sir,

my name is Ivo Vita, born 1963, live in Toronto, Canada. I had vitiligo on my hands, underarms and knees for 10 years, stable with no change. I would like to try ayurveda treatment, perhaps come to India for 2 to 3 weeks for a complete detox ayurveda therapy.

Hi Vita,

Vitiligo is the specialty of Ayurveda however you have to check your Vitamin D. The prognosis is completely depends only on the Vitamin D and Iron levels. Please check if required consult a physician and add supplements in the diet. Ayurveda recommends internal and external therapies for vitiligo with diet. Stress bursting with Yoga helps too.

Ayurveda detoxification for Vitiligo

Ayurveda adopts three kinds of therapy for Vitiligo depends on the condition, age etc

a. Pacification therapy – with Herbal, Mineral or herbo- mineral medications.
b. Detoxification therapies – Since this disease itself is because of vitiated Pitta dosha, Ayurveda recommends the two fold purification therapies like purgation and bloodletting therapy (Leech therapy)
c. External Application: Smaller and Non / slow spreading patches is usually treated with herbal powder or oil applications. Ayurveda also recommends this type of treatment for Children below 7 years.

Ayurveda texts mentions about many single and compound herbal combinations for Vitiligo. Interestingly, these medicational formulae are very well validated by the modern scientific researches. For example liquid extract of Acacia catechu bark is advised 60 ml every morning by Ayurveda texts for Leucoderma and Vitiligo. This particular practice is very well documented by modern scientific research.

One herb is praised for Leucoderma and Vitiligo in almost all Ayurveda and traditional medicinal texts is Bakuchi / Vakuchi (Psorolia corolifolia) as internal medication, external application etc. This is been used to prepared soaps, external applications, internal medications by both Ayurveda and Modern pharmaceutical companies worldwide. The modern scientific research does agree that this herbal application acts on melanoblastic cells and successfully stimulates it.

Ayurveda Pancha Karma for Vitiligo

Ayurveda recommends its fivefold detoxification therapies for the complete cure for Vitiligo.

a. Therapeutic Vomiting: Vamana is a medicated emesis therapy which removes Kapha toxins collected in the body and the respiratory tract. This is given to people with high Kapha imbalance. Daily treatment involves loosening and mobilizing the toxins in an effort to finally eliminate them.
b. Therapeutic purgation: Virechana is medicated purgation therapy which removes Pitta toxins from the body that are accumulated in the liver and gall bladder; it completely cleanses the gastro-intestinal tract. It is a safe procedure without side effects.
c. Therapeutic enema Therapy: Basti (Enema) is considered as the mother of all Panchakarma treatments since it cleanses the accumulated toxins from all the 3 doshas, Vata, Pitta and Kapha, through the colon. Basti is also highly beneficial as a rejuvenating treatment. Medicated oil or ghee and an herbal decoction is given as enema to clean the colon and increase the muscle tone. This procedure is usually applied for 8 to 30 days, based on the medical condition of a person
d. Therapeutic Nasal Drops: Nasya involves administration of medicated oil through the nose to cleanse accumulated Kapha toxins from the head and neck region. Based on the medical condition of a person, it can be given up to 30 days.
e. Therapeutic bloodletting therapy: Rakta mokshana is procedure to cleanse the blood and is advised only in very rare conditions. It is not advisable during general Panchakarma.

Dear Dr. Gowthaman,
I am 16 years old. My periods were started at the age of 13+. Since last year November, I am not having period. Doctors diagnosed ovarian failure. Doctor advised me harmons therapy and I have to take them till the age of 50 years. I have taken estogen for six months and had regular periods but when I stopped the medicines, periods are also stopped. Is there any ayurvedic medicine which can cure this permanently. Can the ovaries start functioning with the help of ayurvedic medicines or without medicines.
asha bhardwaj

Hi Asha,

Ayurveda terms this condition as Nashta Arthava – Pre mature Ovarian failure. Ayurveda recommends a very specific medicine for this condition called ‘Nashta Pushpantaka Ras’ – 2 tablets three times a day after food with warm water. This helps to get back the menses. Ayurveda medicines like DNA NONI – 15 ml + 100 ml of warm water – twice daily 30 minutes before food and Nashta pushpantaka Ras – 2 tablets thrice daily and Chitraka haritakai lehyam 3 gm at bed time with warm milk is the combination which helps for early meno pause. Good exercise, fat free diet with stress free life style improve the medicines action. Since you are only 16 chances are healing is high.

Hi Sanjay,

Ayurveda Treatment approach is to increase natural healing ability of the body. It may take a few weeks to regenerate the health. After the diagnosis, usually a healing plan with detoxification therapies followed by rejuvenation therapies is carried out. The detoxification therapies are meant to flush out the toxins, which includes pre-purification, purification and post purification phases and include various types of therapies like oil massages, fermented liquid massages, medicinal enemas, herbal purification methods.

The rejuvenation therapies are meant to nourish the body, to bring the functional elements back to balance and to regenerate the body. This includes diet regulations, daily regimens, intake of oral medicines and yoga and a stress free life.

Detoxification therapies for Diabetic neuropathy

Pre purification therapies

Pre-purification therapies are the first ones applied to loosen the toxins, open up the circulation channels and get the body ready for discarding these wastes. These methods are highly relaxing for the body and mind. The following pre-purification therapies are usually adopted for curing Diabetic Neuropathy

a. Snehapanam is an important pre purification therapy. It is a type of Oleation therapy and consists of oral intake of medicated ghee in empty stomach for a specified number of days. This unique treatment helps flush out the toxins from the body.
b. Udwarthanam is a type of body massage using herbal powder. This massage activates the nerves and increases blood flow to the impaired parts of the body.
c. Dhanyamla dhara is the continuous pouring of warm fermented medicinal liquid on the body for nearly 40 minutes. The nerves receive a lot of nourishment from this continuous pouring and are very effective for treating all types of diseases affecting nerves.
d. Thalapothichil is the application of herbal paste on the scalp of a patient for a specific period of time. Selected medicinal herbs, thoroughly ground and made in to a fine paste, is thickly applied on to the scalp of the person. The scalp part of the head is then covered up with usually banana leaf to allow the medicine to stay on and function well. This stays on the person’s head for almost 40 to 50 minutes giving wonderful relaxation to the mind.
e. Thakra dhara is the profuse pouring of specially prepared buttermilk on the forehead of the person for one hour. This cools down the brain, relaxes the mind and reduces stress, tension and anxiety.

Purification therapies

This is the phase of elimination of toxins that were loosened at the pre purification stage. The commonly adopted detoxification treatments for Diabetic Neuropathy are Purgation (Virechana), Emesis (Vamana) and Medicated enema (Vasti)

a. Purgation is the oral intake of safe herbal medicines leading to the elimination of poisonous wastes through the anal route.
b. Emesis is also known as therapeutic vomiting. It is a treatment that eliminates the toxins and waste products through the upper gastro-intestinal track. It expels and cleanses undigested food. It has been found to be highly effective in treating Diabetic Neuropathy.
c. Medicated enema therapy, is the colon cleaning treatment. In this the medicines are introduced through the anal route for the evacuation of accumulated toxins and metabolic wastes. It is highly recommended in the treatment of Diabetic Neuropathy.

Rejuvenation for Diabetic Neuropathy

These are body nourishing therapies to rejuvenate the body and mind after the detoxification treatments. They keep the enzymes in the tissue cells in their normal functioning condition, restore and balance the body functions and maintain the overall health and well being of an individual for much longer periods after the detox course. Rejuvenation phase of Diabetic Neuropathy consists of oral medicines, diet regulation and yoga.

It is important to have a lifestyle that does not disturb natural body rhythms. When we eat, sleep and exercise in constantly fluctuating and disturbing patterns, the body loses its natural balancing cycles and cannot cleanse or heal itself as effectively. Therefore, regularity in our daily routine can be extremely effective in reducing physiological imbalance to avoid chronic disease.

Dear Sir/Madam,

I am 30.5 years old, 5 feet and 50 kgs and have PCOD since I was 15 years old. I took allopathy and they gave me contraceptives for 2 years. Then I came to know that it’s only for mental satisfaction as the body went back to state-0 after discontinuing tablets. I haven’t taken any medication since then. Only recently — after getting married — I have started to think again as we want kids. I get periods only 3-4 times in an year, and this time I haven’t got any since Sep 15th (which was very heavy and it never happened like this earlier). I have
consulted one allopathy doctor and she gave me Primolute for 5 days (am still on it). I don’t want to take Allopathy. Please suggest some medication. Also, if you can suggest some
good Ayurvedic doctor in Bangalore, it will help. I exercise almost daily and eat a staple diet. I do take skim curd though.

Charu Tiwari

Hi Charu,

PCOD requires a holistic treatment with Ayurveda, Yoga and Diet. Ayurveda medicines + Personalized Yoga and diet can heal the condition in no time. Please take the following medications
