Dear Dr.Gowthaman,

I am 45 years old and have been undergoing medicine for past couple of years for Diabetes. Preently I having Semi Glynase (1-0-1) and Glycomet 500 (1-0-1)

I am following fairly good diet restrictions along with around 30 mins walk daily. When I started the above medicines the PPBS reading were around 120 but now it has shot up to around 180.

I have read articles about Diabecon DS from Himalaya that it has some good effects.

My question is that along with English medicines can I take Diabecon DS (1-0-1) and does consumption of this herbal have any side effects.

Detoxification and Rejuvenation therapies

Ayurveda recommends purification therapies like vomiting, Purgation, bloodletting, medicated enema and Medicated nasal drops therapy for complete detoxification. Any one of these therapies is carefully selected after considering the cause, age, disease condition, complication, season etc. These primary detoxification therapies are supported by the Preliminary and post therapy procedures for the complete care.

After these purification therapies, the patient is asked to undergo a series of diet and medicine regime, which helps in rejuvenation which in turn helps them to perform better. There are more than 1000 Ayurvedic recipes for treatment and management of Diabetes.

Hi Sanjay Rai,

Diabetic neuropathy is best handled by the natural system.

Healing the body naturally

Ayurveda Treatment approach is to increase natural healing ability of the body. It may take a few weeks to regenerate the health. After the diagnosis, usually a healing plan with detoxification therapies followed by rejuvenation therapies is carried out. The detoxification therapies are meant to flush out the toxins, which includes pre-purification, purification and post purification phases and include various types of therapies like oil massages, fermented liquid massages, medicinal enemas, herbal purification methods.

The rejuvenation therapies are meant to nourish the body, to bring the functional elements back to balance and to regenerate the body. This includes diet regulations, daily regimens, intake of oral medicines and yoga and a stress free life.

Detoxification therapies for Diabetic neuropathy

Pre purification therapies

Pre-purification therapies are the first ones applied to loosen the toxins, open up the circulation channels and get the body ready for discarding these wastes. These methods are highly relaxing for the body and mind. The following pre-purification therapies are usually adopted for curing Diabetic Neuropathy

a. Snehapanam is an important pre purification therapy. It is a type of Oleation therapy and consists of oral intake of medicated ghee in empty stomach for a specified number of days. This unique treatment helps flush out the toxins from the body.
b. Udwarthanam is a type of body massage using herbal powder. This massage activates the nerves and increases blood flow to the impaired parts of the body.
c. Dhanyamla dhara is the continuous pouring of warm fermented medicinal liquid on the body for nearly 40 minutes. The nerves receive a lot of nourishment from this continuous pouring and are very effective for treating all types of diseases affecting nerves.
d. Thalapothichil is the application of herbal paste on the scalp of a patient for a specific period of time. Selected medicinal herbs, thoroughly ground and made in to a fine paste, is thickly applied on to the scalp of the person. The scalp part of the head is then covered up with usually banana leaf to allow the medicine to stay on and function well. This stays on the person’s head for almost 40 to 50 minutes giving wonderful relaxation to the mind.
e. Thakra dhara is the profuse pouring of specially prepared buttermilk on the forehead of the person for one hour. This cools down the brain, relaxes the mind and reduces stress, tension and anxiety.

Purification therapies

This is the phase of elimination of toxins that were loosened at the pre purification stage. The commonly adopted detoxification treatments for Diabetic Neuropathy are Purgation (Virechana), Emesis (Vamana) and Medicated enema (Vasti)

a. Purgation is the oral intake of safe herbal medicines leading to the elimination of poisonous wastes through the anal route.
b. Emesis is also known as therapeutic vomiting. It is a treatment that eliminates the toxins and waste products through the upper gastro-intestinal track. It expels and cleanses undigested food. It has been found to be highly effective in treating Diabetic Neuropathy.
c. Medicated enema therapy, is the colon cleaning treatment. In this the medicines are introduced through the anal route for the evacuation of accumulated toxins and metabolic wastes. It is highly recommended in the treatment of Diabetic Neuropathy.

Rejuvenation for Diabetic Neuropathy

These are body nourishing therapies to rejuvenate the body and mind after the detoxification treatments. They keep the enzymes in the tissue cells in their normal functioning condition, restore and balance the body functions and maintain the overall health and well being of an individual for much longer periods after the detox course. Rejuvenation phase of Diabetic Neuropathy consists of oral medicines, diet regulation and yoga.

It is important to have a lifestyle that does not disturb natural body rhythms. When we eat, sleep and exercise in constantly fluctuating and disturbing patterns, the body loses its natural balancing cycles and cannot cleanse or heal itself as effectively. Therefore, regularity in our daily routine can be extremely effective in reducing physiological imbalance to avoid chronic disease. – See more at: http://rvita.com/index.php?option=com_content&view=article&id=211:-reversing-diabetic-neuropathy-naturally&catid=12:ayurveda-articles&Itemid=79#sthash.THm0j46l.dpuf

Also check your life style habits like water intake, sleep, intake of green and fresh vegetables, fruits etc in diet etc. Otherwise, Having medicines or undergoing therapies may not helpful.

Is there any permanent cure for uric acid or Gout problems.

sai pra

Hi Sai,

nxiety is one of the commonest conditions affecting all age groups. In recent, recession has lead to increased levels of anxiety in all families. This article, I am analyzing the natural ways to curb anxiety effectively and positively. Modern anti depressant therapies and medicines have less impact and known for side effects like Obesity, diabetes etc.

a. Meditation for Anxiety – Both experts from Modern and traditional medical systems agree that the meditation is one the best ways to reduce anxiety. Regular practice of Anxiety helps to curd stress, improves the positive mentality etc. Many studies have shown that the Transcendental meditation is the most effective type of meditation which brings back the normalcy in no time.

b. Homeopathy for Anxiety – One of the studies conducted by Harvard Medical school in 1993, reports the as much as 25% of Americans choose Homeopathy or Alternative medicines as the first medicine to curb Anxiety. Homeopathy medicines are the widely used alternative medicine for Anxiety and many modern psychiatric experts do agree this concept.

c. Herbs for Anxiety – Many herbs in the common market are used as a food supplement to prevent and manage Anxiety. Herbs like Kava Kava is the commonest herb used for reducing tension, anger related headaches etc. Skullcap is the other one, native to traditional American Medicine used to ease the emotional headache and to improve the sound sleep. Europe believes on Valerian roots for calmness and to induce good sleep. India bets on Indian Ginseng – Ashwagandha for stress, Anxiety and sleep disorders. Paciflora extract and St John’s wort are the other herbs commonly used across the globe for anxiety, depression and sleep disorders

d. Hypnotherapy – In recent days, the hypnotherapy found to be very effective for anxiety. Recent surveys shows that the usage of these kind of therapies increased by 19% in last two years. Even though the scientifically the positive effects are still not documented, the patients feels better after every session of the therapy.

e. Aromatherapy for Anxiety – Recent studies have shown the positive results for Aromatherapies for Anxiety. Essential oils like lavender, marjoram are helpful to improve the depressed moods

f. Physical exercises and Anxiety – Many psychiatrists’ recommends physical exercises to reduce the stress and Anxiety. Massages, dance therapies, swimming, cycling etc are commonly recommended exercises.

g. Nutritional Therapies – Most of the times irritability, stress, anxiety, tension etc are related to nutritional deficiencies. A careful nutrition analysis and supplements can reduce the complaint swiftly.

h. Ayurveda for Anxiety- Ayurveda is one of the first traditional systems of medicines explained about Anxiety in detail more than the Modern psychiatric systems. It recommends personalized therapies like Abhyanga, Shirodhara, Pizchil, Navara Kizhi etc for Anxiety. Ayurveda does recommend a specialized three month rejuvenation program for Anxiety with diet, yoga and meditation and exercises, controlled therapies to heal this condition swiftly and completely.

These natural approach to Anxiety is very effective than the Modern medicine approach. As these are natural products which helps improving the psychological health and wellbeing unlike Modern medicines which just suppress the symptoms and doze you out.

my name is reena banerjee i stay in mumbai.. i am 30 years 5ft and weight 68 kgs..i started gaining weight after my baby;s birth she is 1 year..i do exercise go for swimming but not able to loose weight..plz can u guide me..

Reena Saha

Hi Reena,

Follow the Simple Apple diet. One apple before breakfast, lunch and dinner followed by your regular food for 90 days. It will help loose weight.

In Ayurvedic medicine, there is no single approach to treating obesity. Depending on the Prakriti the medications, purification therapies and diet varies.
For example, for a vata dominant person, the vata purification therapies like cleansing and Oleation enemas are part of the treatments. Abhyanga and herbal steam bath does play a major role in Vata type of person’s treatment plan. For Kapha type obesity, treatment plan includes external powder applications with giner, mustard etc. If the obesity is due to excessive accumulation of toxins (Ama dosha) both internal medications and external applications are advocated.

a. Usage of Barley, Green gram, Red gram and Horse gram is recommended
b. Honey is recommended in minor doses
c. Always drink warm water to eliminate the toxins
d. For cooking Sesame oil/ Mustard oil is indicated. Spices like turmeric, black pepper, ginger and rock salt are advised for obesity.
e. Vegetables with astringent, bitter and pungent taste, soup with such vegetables as diet improves the weight loss
f. Avoid sweets prepared from wheat, cakes, pastries, milk and sugar, cold drinks, alcohol, deep fried foods and non vegetarian diet.
g. Active physical life is very important to prevent and manage weight gain. Staying awake at night and day sleep will increase the Medo Dhatu which in turn ends up in Obesity.
h. Ayurveda recommends herbs like Amrutha (Tinospora cordifolia), Mustaa (Cyperus rotundsa) Haritaki (Terminalia Chebula), Bibhitaka (Terminalia belerica) and Aamalaka (Embica officinalis) for prevention and management of this condition.
i. Ayurveda recommends a special weight loss recipe called “Takra Arishta” – Fermented buttermilk for active weight loss

As we all are genetically different with different constitutions and patterns, we respond to treatments in many different ways. Hence Standard Ayurvedic Treatments for obesity are always individually formulated. In Ayurvedic medicine, there is no single approach to treating obesity. After taking the pulses and examining the patient, an Ayurvedic practitioner designs a treatment plan to bring the doshas back into balance which in turn addresses obesity swiftly and permanently.

In these 90 days, drink water processed with Jeera for help (1 lt of water + 5 gm of Jeera seeds – Boiled for 5 minutes)

Common Herbs for Gall Bladder stones

1. Gokshura (Tribulus terristis): It is one of the best known herbs for removing unwanted toxins from gallbladder and kidneys. It is effective in most urinary tract & gallbladder disorders because it promotes the flow of urine and bile; cools and soothes the membranes of the body; and helps remove stones. It stops the bleeding, and nourishes and strengthens the digestive and reproductive organs. The herb has been used in treating cystitis, renal calculi (kidney stones), incontinence, gout and impotence. It may also have a mild diuretic action.

2. Cilantro (Coriander sativa) leaves: It prevents the formation of gall stones and breaks up the chain of gall stones formation.

3. Corn (Zea mays) silk: Corn silk has a beneficial effect on kidney and gallbladder reducing stone formation and it also helps relieve some of the symptoms of existing stones. It soothes and relaxes the lining of the bladder, relieving irritation and improving bile flow and elimination.

Yogic Management of Gallstones

Common Yoga postures recommended for Gallbladder stones

1. Hatha Yoga
2. Back stretch pose
3. Bow pose

Diet and Nutrition for Gallstone Patients

Following are the diet and nutrition guidelines for managing gall bladder stones.

1. Consume a low fat diet.
2. Drink lot of water.
3. Foods like artichokes, barley, oat bran, broccoli, dandelion greens, alfalfa and oat bran may be beneficial.
4. Non-vegetarians can have fish, chicken and turkey in their diet.
5. Red meat and spicy foods are prohibited for gall bladder stone patients.
6. Take: Beet, cucumber, garlic and garlic oil, avocados, artichokes, ginger root, coconut, grapes and grape juice, apple, apricots, berries, casaba melons, currants, figs, guavas, lemons, pears, prunes, turmeric, and flax oil.
7. Avoid: eggs, pork, onion, fowl, milk, coffee, grapefruit, oranges, corn, beans and nuts, alcohol, saturated fats, hydrogenated oils and partially hydrogenated oils.

Home Remedy for Gallbladder Pain

1. One common beet root + Juice of half lemon + 2 table spoon of flax oil / 10 ml of olive oil + 10 ml of fresh lemon juice + 5 gm of crushed Garlic – Use this mixture once a day in an empty stomach.

2. One bunch parsley + 3 medium zucchini + ½ lb. Green beans + 5 stalks celery – Steam together for 8-10 minutes or partially steam and boil in ½ cup water or the Flax Seed Tea.

Liquids are best during an attack. You could try the Beet Recipe. Many find it helps, but others do better with just liquids. It is wonderful for relief from all sorts of gastric disturbances such as stomach pain, gas, and indigestion. I do not add any fat or salt to this recipe. It can be used anytime but is particularly useful as a three day fast with nothing else but water. It is both nourishing and easy to digest. You can alter the amounts to taste. More beans add more sweetness.

Hi Nilofar,

An Holistic approach has better results.Ayurvedic treatment involves clearing these channels in order to balance body energies and restore the circulation of thyroxin. Herbal preparations are administered to increase the digestive fire at a cellular level, restoring proper metabolism.

Take adequate quantities of milk in your diet.

Increase intake of rice, barley, Bengal gram, moong dal and cucumber.

Coconut oil helps in improving body metabolism in thyroid patients.

Avoid heavy and sour foods.

Mix equal quantities of long pepper (Pipali), black pepper and dry ginger powder. Consume half teaspoon twice a day with lukewarm water.

Chew Licorice (mulethi) and Black Pepper in a 2:1 ratio three times a day.

Kaanchanara (Bauhinia veriegata) – This is known as purple mountain ebony and probably most powerful drug in Ayurvedic pharmacopoeia for treating any type of thyroid problems. This herb is available in the form of pill or tablet.

Guggulu (Commiphora mukul) – This is the drug that is used widely in present Ayurvedic practice. This is well known for its calorie burning properties and therefore used abundantly in reducing weight i.e. obesity. Hypothyroidism is closely related with obesity and therefore, this herb is extremely useful treating the condition. This is available in the form of tablet, pill and capsule.

Punarnava (boerhaavia diffusa Linn) – This herb falls in the category of diuretic. This is an excellent remedy for treating swelling or inflammation from all over the body. Since hypothyroidism has one of the symptoms of swelling and numbness all over the body, Punarnava can be very beneficial for treating such conditions. This is very good tonic and it can also be used for general health.
