Healthy snacks for diabetics

`Don`t snack in between meals!` – You must have often heard this while growing up! But the truth is eating between mealtimes is not a bad idea at all, especially if you are diabetic. Snacks keep your blood sugar level stable between mealtimes and help sustain high energy levels through the day, both crucial in tackling diabetes. But the catch lies in making sure that the food you choose to eat are healthy. While most snacks, laden as they are with sugar, fat, or salt, may be a potential health hazard for the non-diabetic population, they forebode disaster for diabetics.

So what`s considered safe snacks for diabetics?

Diabetes is a condition resulting from too much glucose circulating in the blood stream. The management of diabetes revolves around losing weight and keeping the glucose in your blood under control. While it is widely believed that diabetics need to follow a strict dietary regimen, in actuality, a healthy balanced diet that is good for everyone else is good for a diabetic. A low carbohydrate, low fat diet, is considered to be ideal.

Make sure you have three regular meals a day breakfast, lunch and dinner. Try and space two consecutive meals with a snack.
