Points to consider while shopping for cosmetics
New to the world of makeup? Confused about what will suit your skintone or how to choose the right foundation? Celebrity Makeup artist Meghna Butani lists down a few points that one needs to remember while shopping for cosmetics.
The most important point to consider and figure out before buying makeup would be an analysis of your skin type and undertone colour. It is important to know if you have dry, oily or combination skin and it is also important to know what the undertones of your skin are for eg : yellow , pink.
Once you figure this out then it’s easy to pick a foundation and colour scheme to match. These days makeup is available according to all skin types and colour. You could also look up for reviews of makeup products offered by various brands online. These days most makeup is available as a 2-in-1 product, for e.g, foundation with a SPF, moisturizer with SPF or primer with a moisturizer. So make sure you read up about products as this will help you avoid spending unnecessarily.
Another important thing to consider is how you are going to apply the makeup. Most cosmetic counters will have someone willing to do a free demo, I would recommend trying at least 4-5 brands and then figuring out what looks best to you and not the person selling the products. If you feel you look like yourself then it’s probably the right shade for you. Trust your own judgement.
Do not be mislead by what bollywood stars are endorsing as what works on one person may not work on you. Instead try and work with colours that work for your skin colour and choose colours that compliment your skin tone and mood.
These days most makeup is mineral based so if you travel and don’t mind spending a little, pick up one or 2 good products which will last you for the next 6 months at least. Remember if you get a good concealer and foundation , 90 percent of the makeup is done.
Please make sure to consider the expiry dates on products that you buy, especially mascaras that usually expire in 3 months and clump due to our weather. Lipsticks go bad in hot and humid weather , so make sure you test the product and check the date on your purchase ,
Always buy eyeshadow and lip colour palettes as these are usually made keeping colour schemes in mind and one can usually go from a day to a night look with the help of the same palette. If you are unsure about how to apply eyeshadow stick to a creamy eyeshadow which will be easy to apply.
Invest in a good lip and cheek tint as this can instantly do the job of lip stick and cheek colour and can brighten up tired skin in a second.
If you must pick bright colours then make use you highlight one element on the face and not make yourself look clowny.
Eg : if you decide to go fuschia pink on the lips do not go smokey with the eyes, instead keep the eyes nude with lots of mascara.
Most importantly try and read up reviews of expensive products before you buy them. Sometimes a few ingredients in a product might not suit you and you may end up with an expensive product that you are allergic to.
